Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Death comes to Animal Crossing: New Horizons

It’s Friday, so we’re keeping it light.

Yesterday’s Animal Crossing: New Horizons Direct included all manner of exciting new features to be found on Nook Inc.’s Deserted Island Getaway, like relocating your home, hemisphere-dependent seasons, and… death. Don’t worry, it’s unlikely it’s yours… unless you’ve been dead all along – what a twist! That would explain a lot of things…

Observant viewers pointed out that a gravestone appears around the 22-minutes mark of the presentation and fans are shook.

Death doesn’t come up all that often in a game series about surrounding yourself with bucolic cuteness in order to escape the banal reality of your existence (no judgement), so fans have been wondering who, exactly, has crossed the rainbow bridge.

Good money is on it being Joan, the aged turnip purveyor, since it appears that the lucrative turnip business has been taken over by newcomer Daisy Mae, the sprightly little boar. Was it just old age, though? Or perhaps an altogether more sinister situation? We may never know.

You have to remember: there’s always money in the turnip stand.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons comes out for the Nintendo Switch on 20 March 2020.
