Q&A with South African Gaming Content Creators

Content creators have become our go-to entertainment when it comes to games, leading us to spend hours upon hours consuming everything they do. Whether it be watching them rank up on a popular game like Rocket League or just having casual conversations through their social channels, Content Creators are like the celebrities to whom we actually have access.

We decided to ask a few of our favourite local creators some questions to get to know them a little better, and hopefully, you will find a new creator to love and support. If you find any creators you’ve yet to follow, we’ve added their links so you can catch them live on a stream or perhaps giggle at their social posts. Just keep it clean, children.

NAG: What games are you currently playing?
Bumfluffski: I’m currently maining Rocket League but have been diving into a recent obsession with Hunt: Showdown. I often play games to connect with friends, and I don’t take them very seriously, so whatever is on rotation with the choms normally finds its way in front of me.

NAG: What’s been your favourite launch this year so far, and what game are you most excited about in the coming months?
Bumfluffski: I’m excited about the ZA Valorant servers coming through, but I am also looking forward to diving into Starfield and seeing what’s what. It’s not typically the game I would find myself playing (because it’s single-player), but it looks rad, and I’ve been given access to the premium version, and I’m a sucker for free things.

NAG: What platforms do you game on?
Bumfluffski: I play on PC, and more recently, I’ve been playing on a handheld, the Asus Rog Ally.

NAG: What smartphone do you use, and which mobile games do you play?
Bumfluffski: I have a Galaxy S10 (Thanks Manic85), and I only play Pokemon Go on it.

NAG: If you were given a game studio with the budget to develop the game of your dreams, what game would you make, and what would you call it?
Bumfluffski: Imagine a game where players are immersed in a world filled with intrigue, mystery, and cutting-edge technology. The setting is both futuristic and dystopian, challenging players to navigate through complex environments that push the boundaries of reality and fiction. This game would have an engaging storyline driven by profound scientific questions and philosophical dilemmas. Characters would be multi-dimensional, adding depth and emotional connection to the narrative. Players would face enigmatic puzzles, intense combat situations, and unexpected twists that keep them engaged and on the edge of their seats. In terms of gameplay, the focus would be on providing a rich and immersive experience, combining first-person shooter mechanics with strategic problem-solving. The use of advanced AI would create realistic, responsive enemies, adding to the intensity of the game. Collaboration, decision-making, and a nonlinear storyline would allow players to shape their journey and the world around them. Visually, the game would push the boundaries of current graphics capabilities, offering stunning, lifelike environments that react dynamically to player actions. The sound design would be equally compelling, providing an atmospheric experience that draws players into the game’s world. I’d probably name it Half-Life 3.

NAG: What games are you currently playing?
RushkaGG: Hunt: Showdown, Remnant 2, Stardew Valley

NAG: What’s been your favourite launch this year so far, and what game are you most excited about in the coming months?
RushkaGG: The Dead Island 2 launch was pretty sick and I can’t wait for Hellblade 2, the first one blew me away.

NAG: What platforms do you game on?
RushkaGG: PC and Switch – only because I don’t own any consoles.

NAG: What smartphone do you use, and which mobile games do you play?
RushkaGG: I have an iPhone for personal use and a Samsung for work. I barely have time to play any games lately; during load shedding, I’ll jam Stardew Valley on my Switch or Travel Town when I’m taking a shit. It’s a 10/10 mobile merging game, highly addictive.

NAG: If you were given a game studio with the budget to develop the game of your dreams, what game would you make, and what would you call it?
RushkaGG: Think of an open-world RPG franchise like Fallout meets District 9. The first game would be mapped in the Western Cape, and every 3 years, we launch a new game but from a different province. Maybe throw in a multiplayer game mode as well. I’m terrible with naming things; that’s why I gave myself the tag RushkaGG – literally just my name. I would hire someone to name the game or ask AI.
[Rushka, we asked ChatGPT for you, and it said your game should be called Southlands Odyssey after we had to put it in its place. – Cody]

NAG: What games are you currently playing?
ThendoPlays: I am playing a lot of Valorant as of late and really enjoying the game. I really like watching esports as well, I find it very engaging and fun to watch. Of course, I’ll always be playing Apex Legends, as it is my first love when it comes to games.

NAG: What’s been your favourite launch this year so far, and what game are you most excited about in the coming months?
ThendoPlays: I’m not really one to play games other than online multiplayer, and there aren’t any on my radar that I think are any good. I’m a big fan of the Assassin’s Creed franchise, so I’m really keen to see how Mirage is going to turn out.

NAG: What platforms do you game on?
ThendoPlays: I’m predominantly a PC gamer and have been for the last five years of my life. I used to own a few consoles back in the day and would still like to have one in the future.

NAG: What smartphone do you use, and which mobile games do you play?
ThendoPlays: I currently have an S22 Ultra. I’m not much of a mobile gamer, but I enjoy the occasional Call of Duty: Mobile and a bit of Candy Crush.

NAG: If you were given a game studio with the budget to develop the game of your dreams, what game would you make, and what would you call it?
ThendoPlays: Funnily enough, I’ve always had the dream of one day making a game that’s like Tomb Raider and The Last of Us, which are two of my favourite titles. Adventure and exploration games are really cool to create, so I feel I’d really enjoy doing that.

NAG: What games are you currently playing?
RustyPieLover: I’m currently enjoying Baldur’s Gate 3, Dota 2, Valorant, Palia and TMNT Shredder’s Revenge!

NAG: What’s been your favourite launch this year so far, and what game are you most excited about in the coming months?
RustyPieLover: Well, it USED to be Diablo 4, and we all know what happened… luckily Baldur’s Gate 3 came out and WHAT A GAME! As for games coming out, everyone else is ready for Starfield, so add me to the list!

NAG: What platforms do you game on?
RustyPieLover: I jam on PC, PS5, Android!

NAG: What smartphone do you use, and which mobile games do you play?
RustyPieLover: Currently on the Samsung S21 Ultra, and I’m shuffling between Bloons TD6 and Survivor.io. Strategy and mindless stuff for the win!

NAG: If you were given a game studio with the budget to develop the game of your dreams, what game would you make, and what would you call it?
RustyPieLover: Ooooooh! I’ve wanted to make a game for a while called Lords of Magic. It’ll be a re-master of sorts, featuring a lot of turn-based strategy, DnD and RPG elements! I could go into it, but it would take forever!

NAG: What games are you currently playing?
AndrovaZA: I just started Baldur’s Gate 3 (addicted), and soon I’ll be fighting with how to split my time when Starfield releases. I’m also awaiting the Val ZA servers!

NAG: What’s been your favourite launch this year so far, and what game are you most excited about in the coming months?
AndrovaZA: I played a game called Season: Letter to the Future and I don’t often play story-based indie games but it was such an emotional game; I’m so glad I took a PvP break to play it. I literally cannot wait for Starfield; space-faring games are my bread and butter and I’m so excited to have an entirely new universe to explore.

NAG: What platforms do you game on?
AndrovaZA: PC only – I really badly want a Switch, though.

NAG: What smartphone do you use, and which mobile games do you play?
AndrovaZA: I’m a filthy Apple fangirl. I play Mario Kart, Sky: Children of the Light (which NicholasVanJ got me back into!), Pokemon: GO and Marvel: Future Fight.

NAG: If you were given a game studio with the budget to develop the game of your dreams, what game would you make, and what would you call it?
AndrovaZA: I have the creativity skills of a goldfish, but I’d probably make a cooking sim with only my fave homemade things to make and bake so I can share my recipes with everyone. I’d probably call it Koesister Paleis or something LMAO.

Their answers –

NAG: What games are you currently playing?
DaddyCOolZA: I’ll probably always be an FPS gamer. Currently, I’m in love with CoD again, but mostly for ranked play. I used to be a professional player in the ZA scene, and it’s the game that got me into online gaming, so it’ll always have a special place in my heart, no matter how bad the game is sometimes xD Other than that, you can find me playing Apex Legends in my streams or on DotA with my friends for my more casual games.

NAG: What’s been your favourite launch this year so far, and what game are you most excited about in the coming months?
DaddyCOolZA: There haven’t been any big launches for my genre of games lately, but in general, I’m excited to see how well our local TOs have been performing and growing the esports scene in general. I’m keeping my eye on xDefiant, though I sadly missed the beta. As for what I’m excited about in the coming months… SOUTH AFRICAN VALORANT SERVERS and CS2! I’m always excited about esports things, and I believe these are awesome editions to the esports scene for South Africa!

NAG: What platforms do you game on?
DaddyCOolZA: PC MASTER RACE ALL THE WAY, though mostly because it’s too expensive to be on multiple platforms xD. Also, Ratchet and Clank have come to PC, and that was the only reason I would’ve gotten a PS5, so I’m pretty stoked to get my hands on that.

NAG: What smartphone do you use, and which mobile games do you play?
DaddyCOolZA: Samsung Galaxy S22+. I play a lot of puzzle and idle-type games, but I love myself some Teamfight Tactics and Marvel Snap. I’ve spent waaaay too many nights accidentally playing them until 1AM.

NAG: If you were given a game studio with the budget to develop the game of your dreams, what game would you make and what would you call it?
DaddyCOolZA: I would honestly make a fully competitive free-to-play CoD. No one can deny that CoD has some of the best, if not the best gun play in the FPS industry. Make a CoD that’s free to play, doesn’t release yearly and actually has proper weapon balance in mind, and you have my dream game. What would I call it, though? “Call of Duty: The one that competitive players have been asking for for a decade at this point”

NAG: What games are you currently playing?
Gmax_Yoda: I’m playing Genshin Impact, Baldur’s Gate 3, Persona 5 Royale, Legend of Zelda, Palia, Stardew Valley, and some Pokemon. Genshin just got a massive update, so I’ve been playing that mostly, but I’ve been having an amazing time with Baldur’s Gate 3. I blame these games for my broken sleep schedule.

NAG: What’s been your favourite launch this year so far, and what game are you most excited about in the coming months?
Gmax_Yoda: My favourite launch this year was definitely The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. I am a huge Zelda fan; love the games and the lore. I’ve played an insane amount of the previous game from the franchise Breath of the Wild, so this was a long-awaited game for me. It definitely lived up to its expectations, and I was so happy that they managed to surpass Breath of the Wild. In terms of games I’m looking forward to in the coming months, there’s the New Super Mario Wonder and the remastered Super Mario RPG. I love the Super Mario franchise; we haven’t had any new games for a while, so this was a pleasant surprise to see in the latest Nintendo Direct. I’m also excited for the remake of the original Persona 3 game, Persona 3 Reload. I’m a huge fan of the Persona franchise. never had the desire to play the original Persona 3 with its older gameplay mechanics from the PlayStation 2 era, but now, with the remake coming out next year, I’m over the moon. Then there’s the upcoming DLC for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet in December. Anything Pokemon is just *mwah! chef’s kiss. Lastly, Tekken 8, I’ve been a fan of the franchise, but I haven’t played since Tekken 5.

NAG: What platforms do you game on?
Gmax_Yoda: I mostly play on PC, and then there’s my Nintendo Switch. RIP my Xbox, which I haven’t touched since I got my PC earlier this year.

NAG: What smartphone do you use, and which mobile games do you play?
Gmax_Yoda: I use a Samsung Galaxy A71. I mostly play Genshin Impact, Cookie Run Kingdom, and Honkai Star Rail on my phone. I was into Clash Royale and Marvel Snap for a bit, then I kinda stopped playing those.

NAG: If you were given a game studio with the budget to develop the game of your dreams, what game would you make, and what would you call it?
Gmax_Yoda: This is quite a tough question. If I were given a game studio with the budget to develop the game of my dreams, I would definitely want to create an adventure/story RPG. A game where players embark on quests that unveil the mysteries of the world, its history, and the elemental forces at play. It would have an impactful story driven by the choices the player makes throughout the game. These choices would affect character relationships, alliances, and the overall outcome of the story. In terms of gameplay and combat, the combat system would be centred around elemental powers. Players can harness different elemental abilities such as fire, water, earth, air, and more. Each elemental power has its own strengths and weaknesses, encouraging players to strategize and bringing variety to battles. Lastly, I would want it to have a co-op. Co-op is essential for me, so I would want my dream game to have it. As for the name, I would call it Ethereal Chronicles: Realms of Elements. 🙂

NAG: What games are you currently playing?
Janique_za: Apex Legends is my main baby, and I dabble in a bit of Fortnite, Fallguys, Call of Duty and Phasmophobia when I’m feeling brave, or chat is in the mood for some jump scares.

NAG: What’s been your favourite launch this year so far, and what game are you most excited about in the coming months?
Janique_za: Not exactly a launch, but when Street Fighter 6 dropped, a few weeks down the line, Red Bull Kumite was hosted in Pretoria, and I was lucky enough to win some tickets. That being the first esports event I have been to and witnessed live, I was blown away; the production quality and just the scene had a vibe unmatched by anything I’ve been to before.

NAG: What platforms do you game on?
Janique_za: I was originally an Xbox girl (I still have it; she’s my first and original love), but at the start of 2023, I decided to build my first PC, not only for gaming but to try and upgrade the quality of my streams as well. So, I am now a PC girl, and yes, I made the switch to mouse and keyboard. I believe that playing FPS games with a controller is choosing the easy way out.

NAG: What smartphone do you use, and which mobile games do you play?
Janique_za: I have an iPhone 11, which is on its last, dying legs. The battery lasts me a solid 3 hours, and my microphone does not work properly, which is why I never go live on Instagram, but she does the job. She’s probably older than some gamers who have told me to get back to the kitchen :D. That said, I do not play any mobile games on it.

NAG: If you were given a game studio with the budget to develop the game of your dreams, what game would you make, and what would you call it?
Janique_za: Oooof, hard question. You’d think by the amount of complaining that we all do with regards to our favourite games, we’d all be able to develop a better one! I think if I were to develop a game, it would most definitely be a Battle Royale-style game that would follow in the same style as Apex. You get what you find on the map, no buying phase. However, I would spend 90% of the budget on audio. Footsteps would be the biggest selling point of the game. I’d call it “BR with Footsteps” [Haha – Ed]. Hopefully, it would be a bit of a meme game like Battlebit and actually take off! I’d also allow for way more player-based customisation of skins, from hairstyles to clothing attire, allowing players to showcase their unique designs while stomping through lobbies.

NAG: What games are you currently playing?
Dead Oryx: Right now, I am juggling two titles, DiabloIV and Days Gone, but my main focus is on completing Days Gone before the release of Starfield.

NAG: What’s been your favourite launch this year so far, and what game are you most excited about in the coming months?
Dead Oryx: Tough question, given the plethora of amazing games I got to play this year. However, if I were to select just one, I’d have to go with Hogwarts Legacy. The level of polish and refinement in the game is truly remarkable and a rarity during these times of “unfinished and released”. Apart from the upcoming Starfield launch, I am most looking forward to Stalker 2, and I am very much keen to get my hands on the new Mortal Kombat 1.

NAG: What platforms do you game on?
Dead Oryx: Exclusively gaming on PC at the moment.

NAG: What smartphone do you use, and which mobile games do you play?
Dead Oryx: I have the Xiaomi Redmi. I have never really been much of a smartphone gamer outside of Bubble Pop and a few other small-time wasters titles.

NAG: If you were given a game studio with the budget to develop the game of your dreams, what game would you make, and what would you call it?
Dead Oryx: I would really like to see a game that embodies the spirit of Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag while carrying the same level of refinement seen in Hogwarts Legacy, with the vibrant colour palette often found in Naughty Dog’s titles. Then, we stitch it all together with a profound, immersive narrative. Let’s keep the name simple and to the point. “Boats, Babes and Booty”
