It looks like Unity has still not made its way out of the pit, as CEO John Riccitiello is set to retire from his CEO role and chair position on the board of directors.
As previously reported, Unity attempted to implement a new pricing structure for developers who wanted to use the platform. However, this was met with an uproar from developers, and many stated that they would be moving away from the software completely.
Riccitiello has served at Unity for over ten years and has been in the CEO position for most of those years. It has been “a privilege to lead Unity for nearly a decade and serve our employees, customers, developers and partners, all of whom have been instrumental to the company’s growth”, said Riccitiello in the press release from Unity.
James Whitehurst will be filling in as interim CEO while Unity looks for a more permanent replacement, and Riccitiello has said that he will remain to advise until they do find one.
Whoever becomes the new CEO will have some work to do. The company’s balance sheets were obviously not favourable for the board. Hence the changes to its pricing structure. Add that to the distrust from the community that is steadily growing, and you’ve got yourself a plateful.
