Your Esports Weekly Recap

Sometimes, work just gets in the way of keeping up with your favourite esports. We understand. As people who work in the industry, even we find it hard to stay on top of the 3.56 million games that take place every day.

But, worry not, because Cody has been sitting up all night collating all the data he can find to bring you an easy-to-digest recap of what’s been going on in esports this week.

So, don your favourite team’s shirt and let’s dig in.

League of Legends:

League of Legends is currently hosting their Mid-Season Invitational, where top teams from across the globe compete for a spot at Worlds.

This week saw all of the opening rounds take place.

Game 1: Gen.G took on G2 and won with an epic 3-1 victory in the best-of-five format. G2 put up a formidable first game but were no match in the following three against Gen.G.

Game 2: Anyone’s Legend (AL) took on FlyQuest and managed to topple the American leaders with a 3-1 victory in the best-of-five format. FlyQuest, like G2, put on a good game one, but were unable to keep the pressure going.

Game 3: Movistar KOI (MKOI) took on Bili Bili Gaming (BLG) and lost 1-3. Although the scorecard might not show it, MKOI put up an excellent fight and had BLG on their toes every minute.

Game 4: Reigning world champions T1 battle it out against the Flying Oysters (CFO). In typical T1 fashion, they left it to the very end to secure victory in a heated 3-2 matchup that almost had them down in the losers’ bracket.

This weekend we’ll see the next four games where the four losing teams take each other on, knocking out two of them and the four winning teams take each other on, knocking two more teams down to the losers bracket.

Dota:

We await news on The Invitational, which usually takes place around September.

Counter Strike:

We await more news for IEM Cologne, starting on the 23rd of July.

Valorant:

The Stage 2 Playoffs for Valorant are underway, with teams competing for top spots in their region. This means we have more than our fair share of games to watch over the next few weeks.

With over 40 regional games already taking place this week, and the first Valorant China game done and dusted, it’s going to be one hell of a season.

Game 1: Edward Gaming (EDG) took on Titan Esports Club (TEC), knocking them over with a 2-0 victory. Placing EDG at the top of Group A and bumping TEC all the way down to the bottom.

Fortnite:

The Fortnite Champions Series Trios kicks off on July 16th. We’ll have more news once the games start rolling.

Apex Legends:

The ALGS kicks off in Riyadh with the Electronic Sports World Cyber Cup on the 10th of July, boasting a $2 million prize pool.

Teams from all around the world include the ALGS Year 4 winners, Go Next, as well as the rest of the podium holders, Alliance, Falcons and the Shopify Rebellions.

You can check out more of what’s coming on the 16th of July here.

FIFA/Rocket League/UFL:

With Team Falcons securing the win at the RLCS Raleigh Major on the 28th of June, the football leagues are taking a well-earned, short rest.

Street Fighter:

With the Capcom Cup 12 taking place early next year, leagues around the world are hosting offline tournaments to select the top 48 players who will battle it out.

The next two upcoming regional tournaments include Blink Respawn in the Dominican Republic and EVO in Las Vegas, America.

And there you have it, a nice, short, sweet recap of what’s been happening on the global stages of some of the most competitive games in the world.
