As much as I’ve fallen in love with going back to speakers over always wearing headphones, there are still many hours of my day spent with a pair of cans on my head.

Whether it’s for meeting purposes, keeping down the volume for everyone else around me, or trying to sneak in a game at the office without anyone knowing, headphones still have their place in my gaming setup.

And so, after I had seen the Redragon Zeus Pro Wireless Gaming Headset in action at rAge last year, I definitely wanted to give them a try.

Right off the bat, you’ll notice these headphones come standard with some pretty neat features. For one, they have tri-mode connectivity, meaning they can connect to your devices via a 2.4Ghz dongle, a wired USB-C connection, or via Bluetooth.

They also come with 4 modes of RGB lighting, which you can see through the Redragon emblem on each cup, and they feature 7.1 Surround Sound built in.

This tri-mode connectivity means that the Zeus Pro can connect to almost every device out there, even though they don’t come with the standard 3.5mm audio jack that many wired headphones come with.

On the outside, the headphones do look like they have a pretty decent build quality. Most of the surfaces have that soft-touch rubber coating them, and the headband has an attached pleather sleeve with the cushioning underneath. I do worry that this may degrade over time, but overall, I don’t see these falling apart if you take good care of them.

The pads on the cups are made of some sort of cotton-like material, which I prefer to the leather-like’s you get on some other brands.

Weighing in at just over 680g, they also find a perfect balance of being lightweight enough on your head, while still not feeling cheap.

Of course, it all comes down to audio when you’re looking for a new pair of headphones, and I’m pretty confident in saying that these are pretty decent. I’ve certainly had clearer or more powerful headphones on my head before, but in this price range, the Zeus Pro’s perform quite well.

They’re not as bassy as I usually enjoy, and they do feel a little muffled at times, but voices feel clear enough, games feel engaging, and they keep the tunes banging.

On AudioCheck.net, I could hear between 20Hz and 17KHz across the low and high spectrum.

The 7.1 Surround Sound feature also does a good job of imitating surround sound. In some videos, it produced a weird echo, but in-game, it worked surprisingly well.

The microphone is also good, too. It does have some built-in noise cancelling, which does well enough, and it’s detachable, so you don’t always have to have it in your face if you have a separate microphone. There is also a handy mute button on the headphones for quick muting functionality. I have seen some reports that, because of the twistable mic arm, you can break the connection to your microphone, and I can see that happening if you’re not careful.

The battery life is not too bad either, with around 25 hours per charge, so you’ll get around a week’s worth of work hours before having to plug them in.

I will also admit that the headphones have a pretty strong clamp. They definitely won’t fall off if you throw your head back after a loss, but after a few hours with them on, I do start to feel my head getting tired of wearing them.

The kicker, though, is that these headphones are at a recommended retail price of only R999. For less than R1,000, you could score yourself a pretty good pair of headphones that I don’t think many gamers out there would have any issues with.

They have some premium level features, for a much smaller price than you’d pay for a premium set of headphones. While they aren’t perfect, the Redragon Zeus Pro Wireless Gaming Headset certainly is one to consider for anyone on a budget.

BOTTOM LINE
The Redragon Zeus Pro Wireless Gaming Headset packs a lot of features you’ll see in a different headset for almost double the price. They do have some issues here and there, but overall, they perform well and make the perfect candidate for a gamer on a budget.
