So developers all over the world have had PS4 “Orbis” development kits for a while now, but they’ve been keeping everything mostly under wraps to avoid speculation about the kind of hardware gamers can expect. The new kits shipping out feature a quad-core A10-series AMD APU processor (likely the A10-5700K mated to a HD6570) with up to 16GB RAM and a 250GB hard drive. I’ve been speculating on my own that the PS4 was making the move away from IBM’s Cell processor to a more traditional x86-64 architecture that lets game deveopers focus more on the game rather than turning their code into largely parallelised software. 2013 and the E3 announcements will be interesting.
