Half-Life: Alyx

Half-Life: Alyx – the prequel nobody asked for that everybody wants

So, this is why we don’t have Half-Life 3? Fine, Valve, take my money.

Half-Life: Alyx is set between the events of Half-Life and Half-Life 2 and focuses on Alyx, and her father Eli’s, early efforts to resist the Combine’s brutal occupation of Earth.

You will be playing as Alyx, fighting, scavenging, and puzzle-solving your way around City 17, in a full-length VR game built to play with any VR device, but especially the Valve Index. Depending how much exploring you’re into, it should take about 15 hours to get through.

The trailer makes Half-Life: Alyx look pretty much exactly like the VR experience you were hoping to get ever since VR became a household thing. Also, it features the voice of Rhys “werewolves not swearwolves” Darby so now I have to play it.

If you happen to have gotten your little paws on Valve’s fancy new Index VR headset (not currently available in South Africa), you’ll be getting Half-Life: Alyx for free, plus some bonus cosmetic content for this and for Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. Otherwise, for everyone else, it’s currently available to pre-purchase on Steam, for the discounted price of R296.10.

Half-Life: Alyx is set to release in March 2020.
