Stuff you missed from Gamescom 2022 (part 2)

Gamescom 22 celebrated the world of gaming for five days, reaching 130 million views over the entire program. Making this easily one of the biggest gaming conferences of the year, was the 265,000 people attending the event and with more than 1,100 exhibitors from 53 different countries, we were treated to a variety of news and previews.

With the help of Steam to gather all the information, we’ve put together a list of games from several genres and themes that we believe might be worth checking out.

Atomic Heart [Steam Link]

Up first is an action-packed first-person shooter with RPG elements called Atomic Heart developed by Russian studio Mundfish. Atomic Heart is set in a 1950s parallel reality where robots and other cutting-edge technology were created in the Soviet Union during World War II. Your character is P-3, a mentally ill KGB special agent who is dispatched by the government to examine a manufacturing plant that has gone quiet. He discovers that the machines have gone rogue and are conducting bizarre bioengineering experiments.


Homeworld 3 [Steam Link]

Homeworld 3 is the latest development by Blackbird Interactive in the space-based Homeworld series and is set after the events of the previous two games. In this GOTY-winning sci-fi RTS story, strategic freedom is yours as you take command and engage in fleet warfare in gorgeous fully 3D space. Homeworld 3 boasts an extensive campaign mode for solo gameplay while a new co-op mode will also be launching.


Figment 2: Creed Valley [Steam Link]

Jump into the human mind in the action-adventure game Figment 2: Creed Valley developed by Bedtime Digital Games. Your character is Dusty, the mind’s courage, as nightmares are spreading you face your fears head-on and make your way through a variety of puzzles, musical boss fights and unique environments. A new companion mode for local co-op ensures you never have to face your fears alone.


Dredge [Steam Link]

DREDGE is a single-player fishing adventure where you captain your fishing trawler to explore a collection of isles and their surrounding waters. As you sell your catches and complete quests you can upgrade your boat with better equipment to trawl deep sea trenches and explore far-off lands, but be careful what lies beneath as you might not like what finds you in the dark…


Back to the Dawn [Steam Link]

Developer Metal Head Games is sending you to a maximum-security prison in Back to the Dawn, survive, explore and escape! An exciting RPG populated by animals of every shape and size, your character is Thomas, a wrongfully imprisoned fox with only 21 days to prove his innocence. Players have choices to make which have long-term consequences for how the story will play out, be strong and smart and collect evidence to ensure a life of freedom.


Relic Space [Steam Link]

Back into space with an epic sci-fi narrative in Relic Space. A roguelike/RPG hybrid where you play an elite starship pilot, completing procedurally generated missions for your faction as you help rebuild civilisation following a galactic catastrophe. Use your tactical skills on a hex grid with fast-paced ‘one-tile-per-turn’ mechanics inspired by traditional roguelikes, but with a fluid, modern feel.


Life of Delta [Steam Link]

Sticking with the sci-fi theme is developer Aero Games with their point-and-click adventure game, Life of Delta. Set in a post-apocalyptic world, the story follows Delta, a small service robot who embarks on a journey to find his lost friend. The game boasts 25 hand-painted levels with over 50 engaging mini-games and many interesting characters to interact with.


Backfirewall [Steam Link]

Backfirewall, developed by Naraven Games, is a first-person tragicomic narrative adventure game, that’s set inside a smartphone. You are the update assistant, and the fate of the system is in your hands – as you explore the phone full of intriguing twists and turns, using cheat codes to manipulate the environment, meeting the various characters along the way, solve puzzles to counter the update and save the previous operating system from deletion.


The Cub [Steam Link]

Inspired by classic SEGA games of the 90s – The Jungle Book, Aladdin, Lion King – but with modern twists and ideas, test your parkour skills with Demagog Studio’s The Cub. Outwit evolved wildlife and dangerous hybrid flora as you take on environmental puzzles that keep you guessing while making sure to be one step ahead of the wicked humans pursuing you!


Circle of Kerzoven [Steam Link]

Take on the role of a leader delegated to build new settlements In Circle of Kerzoven’s settlement-building strategy game. Paired with a rich simulation experience, every animal and plant tries to find their way in nature. Lead your villagers to their future and build your economy as you expand across different regions and trade with local factions in a vibrant world affected by seasons and different weather conditions.
