Palworlds “Pokemon with Guns” Meme Might Become a Reality

When I first saw the video, I was pretty surprised, but after having some time to sit and think about it, a Pokémon mod for the latest Pokémon-but-not game makes a lot of sense. What is still surprising, though, is how quickly these modders managed to make one, and one that looks this good.

Palworld has seen some astronomical numbers since its launch on Friday, amassing over 1.5 million concurrent players on Steam, the third highest for any game ever, and has already sold over 5 million copies, beating games like Spider-Man and God of War: Ragnarok during their own first three days of sales, which were 3.1 million and 3.3 million copies respectively.

Combine this new mod with all the social media outbursts about how similar Palword is to the original Pocket Monsters franchise, and you can bet that Nintendo is already sitting in their fancy board rooms, discussing with their lawyers how to get this mod shut down before it’s ever released from it’s metaphoric Pokéball.

While I see the satirical humour in Misty wielding a gun or Pikachu mining rocks for a living, the mod does leave a bit of a bad taste in my mouth. Sure, I’m all for giving Game Freak and Nintendo a bit of competition, considering they’ve managed to beat everything else out there *cough TemTem *cough, but the Pokémon mod itself just seems a little meh. Let Palworld shine as the rootin’, tootin’ six-shootin’ monster hunting game that it is rather than try and over-meme it.
