It’s finally happening! In July, Microsoft will launch its long-awaited and somewhat anticipated mobile app store.
Microsoft’s mobile store wants to be an alternative to Apple and Google’s app stores and their fees. The store’s idea is to debut with Microsoft’s game library, offer discounts, and even offer in-game items associated with mobile games like Candy Crush.
The store will be browser-based to ensure it is accessible across all devices and all countries and independent of the policies of closed ecosystem stores. By taking this approach, Microsoft aims to facilitate gaming across consoles, computers and mobile devices.
While the storefront will only have a first-party lineup on launch, it will expand to partnered products later.
On paper, this all sounds pretty great, but Microsoft hasn’t exactly been painting itself as the good guy in the world of gaming lately, so I guess we’ll just have to wait and see how this service performs when it releases in July.
