Tech Tuesday: Portable Laser Mosquito Zapper

Okay, so this may not be exactly gaming-related, but when I first saw this thing pop up on my feed, I said there was no way this thing existed. And while it technically doesn’t, this device is currently being funded over on IndieGoGo, where the campaign has amassed over R25,000,000 in funding.

I’m talking about the Photon Matrix Anti-Mosquito Air Defence, a LiDAR-powered laser device that can detect mosquitoes and other flying annoyances in the air and instantly zap them with pulse cold laser technology.

My friends in hatred for tiny, annoying bugs, the future is here.

The Anti-Mosquito Air Defence can be mounted on your wall to scan indoor rooms, with a range of up to 6m and at a 90-degree angle, or you can pop it outdoors on a rotating base for a true, mosquito-free camping experience, with your mosquito turret at the ready.

This thing truly blends science fiction and technology and makes the little geek inside me happier than a Jedi hearing their lightsaber go Fwoosh as it lights up.

Unfortunately, I was shot down like a lonely mosquito in the Air Defence’s sights when I saw the price of one of these devices nears the R12,000 mark. And that’s just to back it on IndieGoGo. Photon Matrix predicts the laser shooting legend will retail for almost $900, that’s R16,000 to you and me.

My only hope now is that this thing actually makes it out of the prototype stages and soon becomes a must-have for any braai area or lakeside fishing camp.
