Moola Monday: International Sales You Have to Check Out

It’s always dangerous to discover that an international store actually ships to South Africa.

At first, you’re just having a look. Next thing you know, you’re converting currencies in your head, justifying import costs, and convincing yourself that a limited-edition collector’s item is somehow an investment.

So this week, instead of sticking to local deals, I’ve gone digging through a few international stores that ship to South Africa and currently have some genuinely tempting specials running. Whether you’re into gaming setups, collectables, or books so fancy, you’re too scared to actually touch them, here are three sites worth checking out.

Displate
Birthday Sale – Up to 40% Off Sitewide
Check them out here

If you’re any kind of nerd, geek, or gamer, then Displate has more than likely come across your internet feed, drawing you in with its stylish, metallic eye candy. The company has built a massive following around its metal posters, which range from minimalist artwork to officially licensed designs from franchises like Star Wars, Marvel, Cyberpunk, and more.

Not only does Displate stock thousands of different designs and allow you to custom make your own, but the posters use a magnetic mounting system, too, so you won’t need to turn your wall into Swiss cheese just to hang something up.

Right now, Displate is running a birthday sale with up to 40% off sitewide, making this one of the better times to finally pull the trigger on that setup upgrade you’ve had in your cart for months.

Also, it’s about time you retired that poster you pulled from the 1999 copy of NAG, sealed it away for preservation, and upgraded your wall with something a little more premium.

Forbidden Planet
Star Wars and Doctor Who Sale
Check them out here

Forbidden Planet is basically what happens when nerd culture evolves into an entire online store. The site is packed with collectables, figures, books, comics, apparel, and enough pop culture merchandise to financially ruin anyone with impulse control issues.

Their current sale section has some genuinely fun finds too, including discounted Star Wars figures, Doctor Who merchandise, and even blind-box Squishmallows starting at around R60. Which sounds harmless until you realise you’ve somehow added twelve things to your cart.

It’s one of those sites you clicked on because you saw a retro-looking He-Man figure, and suddenly hours have gone by as you browse the countless amounts of goodies.

The Broken Binding
Collector’s Editions & Signed Books on Sale
Check them out here

If your hobbies lean a little more toward fantasy worlds and beautiful bookshelves, kind of like a book that needs a little more company, The Broken Binding is a dangerous place to spend time. The UK-based store specialises in collector’s editions, special prints, and signed books that look so good you almost don’t want to read them.

The site regularly runs specials on limited-edition hardcovers and exclusive releases, with some incredible discounts currently available across selected collector’s editions and signed copies. For fantasy and sci-fi fans especially, this place feels like stumbling into the Big Bad Evil Guys’ forbidden library while the guards are all asleep.

Just be warned: once you start browsing special edition books with sprayed edges and fancy covers, normal paperbacks begin to feel somewhat inadequate.

While you’re stuffing your carts full of goodies and gadgets to spruce up your space, never forget the import duties. Usually, we can expect to pay around R100 per R1,000 spent, and sometimes those duties only appear once the items have landed on our side of the world.

Don’t let that stop you, though, just remember to keep some moola aside for the Government, because, at the end of the day, money is their favourite hobby, and who are we to hobby-shame them.

As for me, well, I’m trying to figure out if I can somehow build a whole new wall out of Displates alone…
