Tech Tuesday: Filtering Out the Noise

Ever unlock your phone to send a message to your boss and end up doom scrolling through TikTok for half an hour instead because a notification from your favourite content creator popped up?

Yeah. We’ve all been there.

Well, the team at Clicks, who created the Clicks Keyboard phone cover (not the pharmacy), came up with the idea to create a device to help filter out the noise.

They call it the Clicks Communicator.

The device was designed to be a companion to your main mobile phone, but it can replace it entirely if you choose.

With a custom Android Launcher, instead of seeing every notification that your apps are throwing at you, all you see is a list of messages from all your messaging apps to help you “triage” through them all.

On the side, there is a colour-changing LED to notify you at a glance as to which apps are trying to get your attention, which can also be disabled if you’re in focus mode.

Wrapping it all up, the Clicks team have designed the “ultimate” mobile keyboard to provide the best on-the-go typing experience possible.

It also packs a few features of old, like a 3.5mm audio jack and an SD card slot to expand your storage.

The keyboard is also touch-sensitive, allowing you to navigate the OS without obstructing your view of the screen, which is also touch-sensitive, should you need to use it.

And, because it is running Android 16 underneath, you could still install all your favourite apps on the device, which you can choose to access instead of responding to all those messages.

If you’re thinking that it looks like a modernised Blackberry, that’s also because Clicks has two ex-Blackberry moguls sitting on it, who definitely took the Blackberry approach when it came to designing the Communicator.

The device is currently undergoing pre-orders, where you can pick it up for $399, which includes two alternative back covers. Or you can wait for the device to release at its RRP of $499.

We probably won’t get these in our local stores either, so you’ll have to keep an eye out on the international market if something like this piques your interest.

Would the Communicator be a device you use on a daily basis? Perhaps something that replaces your current phone entirely? Or have you embraced the noise and decided to live in the world of social media?
