In this week’s interview, I caught up with Nicholas Holden, Co-Founder and MD at ACGL, one of South Africa’s largest esports organisations, to talk about their upcoming tournament and the state of esports in this country.

The African Gaming Championship returns to GrandWest in Cape Town from the 16th to the 19th of July 2026, and according to Nicholas, the plan is bigger than just another weekend of brackets and people shouting callouts across a LAN floor.

AGC 2026 carries a minimum guaranteed prize pool of more than R150,000, with tournaments across EA FC 26, Fortnite, Rocket League, Tekken 8, Valorant, Brawlhalla, Free Fire, and Call of Duty: Mobile. The Call of Duty: Mobile side also plugs into the Carry1st Africa Cup Southern African qualifier, with the top teams moving towards the LAN Grand Finals in Lagos, Nigeria, and a possible route to the CODM World Championships.

For those that don’t know, that international connection is a big deal. Nicholas said South African and African players are often left off the global map, sometimes literally, and events like AGC help make the local scene harder to ignore. ACGL’s goal is to build bridges from sub-Saharan Africa into international circuits wherever publishers and partners allow it.

The local side matters just as much and Nicholas spoke about connecting tournaments instead of building isolated events that don’t feed into anything else. AGC’s EA FC 26 winner, for example, gets a direct invite to the MTN Shift Grand Finals, while other local tournaments can also act as qualification routes into AGC.
