CD Projekt Red isn’t scared of Half-Life: Alyx

Is CD Projekt Red feeling threatened by Valve’s surprise Half-Life: Alyx announcement and March 2020 release date? No, they’re really, really, not.

On a recent earnings call, CD Projekt Red answered a question about whether the Half-Life: Alyx announcement had them concerned that it might draw interest away from Cyberpunk 2077, which is set for release on 16 April 2020. Half-Life: Alyx is a VR exclusive.

That niche is very, very, very–and I could add a few verys here–small. So, from the market perspective, are we afraid? No. It is a very different niche.

They also suggested that Valve is only releasing Half-Life: Alyx because they’ve invested a lot into the development of VR hardware and they need to push the sales of their fancy new Index headset. What better way to sell a new headset than to develop a game from a classic, much-beloved franchise, that people are still obsessed with 15 years after the release of its most popular entry, that happens to play best with said headset?

CD Projekt Red are quite happy to continue targeting the massive console and PC gamer market. Also, don’t hold your breath for a VR adaptation of The Witcher 3; it’s not going to happen.
