Half-Life: Alyx Art

But who can actually play Half-Life: Alyx?

Not many of us, according to a little data-gathering posted on the Steam subreddit.

Valve recently announced Half-Life: Alyx as a VR exclusive, built to run best on the, also recently announced, Valve Index headset (not currently available in South Africa). You play as Alyx Vance in a pre-Half-Life 2 plot line that revolves around rescuing her father, Eli, from the clutches of the Combine. It looks like the answer to our VR prayers, if not our Half-Life ones.

The trailer got everyone pretty excited, but that doesn’t mean everyone will be able to play it. A Reddit user, named Annsly, recently posted their data, gathered from Steam’s publicly-available information on user hardware, on the Steam subreddit. It seems that, of the 50 most-used graphics cards, only 37 percent of Steam users have cards that are VR-ready. Apparently, a far lower percentage own VR headsets, although that’s more difficult to accurately establish.

I guess Valve is hoping everyone upgrades their graphics and buys the Index before March 2020. The full Index kit only costs, like, $1,000 (about R14,800). What are you waiting for?
